This ICE Alumna Is Up for a 2023 James Beard Award
The Musket Room’s Executive Chef, Mary Attea, has been nominated for Best Chef: New York State
Yesterday, the Leadership Award winners, Humanitarian of the Year, Lifetime Achievement honoree and the Restaurant and Chef Award nominees for the 2023 James Beard Awards were announced.
Among them, ICE alumna Mary Attea, Executive Chef of one-Michelin-starred The Musket Room, was nominated for Best Chef: New York State.
A graduate of ICE’s Culinary Arts program in 2011, Chef Mary joined The Musket Room team in February 2020, transforming the New Zealand-inspired menu to one that draws on the team’s “heritages, world travels and personal inclinations to create vivid flavors and inventive dishes that deftly cross borders and defy categorization,” per the restaurant’s website.
The current tasting menu features a bread course of housemade sourdough boule with anchovy butter, as well as dishes like lobster with sun choke and chamomile and Australian lamb with black garlic, mustard greens and red cabbage. (A fully vegan tasting menu is also available.)
The nominations also highlighted multiple chefs and restaurants in California. Among them are chefs Kyle Connaughton and Katina Connaughton of three-Michelin-starred SingleThread Farm and Niki Nakayama of two-Michelin-starred n/naka. Both restaurants currently employ ICE alumni.
The 2023 James Beard Awards will take place on Monday, June 5, at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Tune into Eater’s livestream at 5:30pm CT to watch the whole thing.
