Food Director, Real Simple, New York City, NY
Culinary Arts, 2002
Sarah Copeland completed degrees in journalism and photojournalism at the University of Missouri School of Journalism, as well as a degree in nutrition at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition at Columbia Teacher’s College. She graduated from ICE’s Culinary Arts program in 2002. She completed her externship in France at Provence’s Chambre d'Hote Le Theron. Copeland was awarded an International Association of Culinary Professionals Julia Child Grant and a Women Chefs & Restaurateurs Food Media Scholarship. After returning to New York City, she integrated her media and food experience into a career in food media. She worked for many years as a freelance editor and author and had her work featured in Health, Fitness, Martha Stewart Living, Saveur, Food & Wine, and more. She was a recipe developer for Food Network Magazine and wrote two cookbooks — The Newlywed Cookbook and Feast: Generous Vegetarian Meals for Any Eater and Every Appetite (both Chronicle Books). Now at Real Simple, she is able to combine all her passions, including writing, editing, photography, food, and nutrition into recipes for practical, delicious meals.
Her advice for culinary students is, “Look under every rock. Explore every passion and curiosity, and learn as much as you can early on. Then, never stop grasping for new challenges.”
