Food Director, Prevention, New York City, NY
Culinary Arts, 1990
At 28, Lori Powell thought she was too old to transition from her advertising career into a culinary one. Fortunately, she met Julia Child at a luncheon, and Child quickly eased her doubts by telling Powell she had started her own career at almost 40. After graduating from ICE she became the assistant to Sara Moulton when she was at Gourmet. After four years she became a food editor and stylist for the magazine, and spent 12 years there. She was the recipe developer and stylist for all of the Gourmet cookbooks from 1995 to 2002, the encyclopedic Gourmet Cookbook published in 2004, and Ruth Reichl’s biography, Comfort Me With Apples. Powell spent a year as deputy editor of food and entertaining at Martha Stewart Living and Martha Stewart Weddings. She joined Ladies’ Home Journal in 2004. Now at Prevention, she develops all of the recipes and styles the food photographs that appear in the magazine.
