Biography

Swana de Gijsel, M.D., M.Sc., is an assistant professor of medicine and faculty in the Hospital Medicine Department at Weill Cornell Medical College, NewYork-Presbyterian. She provides direct patient care at Lower Manhattan Presbyterian and works with residents and medical students at the Cornell campus on the Upper East Side. Swana graduated from medical school at the University of Amsterdam and completed her residency training at Montefiore/Albert Einstein in the primary care/social medicine program.

Swana has a strong interest in communication and how this impacts interpersonal relationships. She practices mindfulness and yoga on a daily basis and brings this to her practice. Earlier this year she completed a faculty in training program with the Academy of Communication in Healthcare (ACH) and has joined as a faculty member.

In her academic time she leads process groups for residents and fellows, and she has a passion for food and nutrition and developed a culinary medicine elective for medical students where she teaches nutrition in a professional kitchen and collaborates with chefs and nutritionists.

When not seeing patients, Swana lives between New York and Amsterdam. She feels passionate about living life to the fullest and is eager to share that energy with her patients and surrounding.
