Zoe Nathan, who is from Los Angeles, moved to New York at 17 and enrolled at the New School, majoring in photography and writing. After a semester she decided to do something with her hands instead and enrolled at ICE. After graduating, she worked at Lupa, then Joe’s in Venice, CA before moving to San Francisco. After working briefly at Traci Desjardin’s Jardinière, she walked into a bakery in San Francisco, found a “whole bunch of girls looking like me, with tattoos” and wanted to both work with them and befriend them. After much persistence they eventually let her, and she was part of the team at the acclaimed Tartine Bakery & Café for two years. Nathan and her husband and partner, Josh Loeb, now own and operate Rustic Canyon Wine Bar and Seasonal Kitchen and Huckleberry Bakery and Café. They were named Los Angeles Rising Stars by StarChefs in 2010. Her advice to students is to “Be humble and learn,” she says, “You have a lot to learn from people. I’m still learning.”
